First up: MVNOs. At the Artilium Executive Summit in May where 120 Benelux industry execs met to discuss MVNOs, Convergence and Unified Communications, one senior telecoms executive said that he was surprised at how much nervousness pervades the industry today. Certainly, the recent high-profile exits in the US market have sent ripples through the industry.
Yet, is it so dire? We think not.
The MVNOs in the US that have targeted niche communities - Movida, Azteca Mobile and others - have proven successful, much like their European counterparts. Innovative new models are emerging with the likes of Sonopia, which applies Web 2.0 consumer emplowerment principles to enable communities to start MVNOs; and Google’s jockeying in the wireless spectrum auction bid is also shaking up the market, from a psychological perspective at the very least.
Ultimately, uncertainty creates opportunities for leaders and innovators to break through. Let the fun begin.
